TOKUJIRO NAMIKOSH
FOUNDER OF SHIATSU

Master Tokujiro was born in a wealthy family in a province called Kagawa, sited in southern island of Shikoku, Japan.

When Tokujiro was seven years old, his father's business was declared bankrupt and, looking for a new life, his family emmigrated to a town called Rusutsu in Hokkaido, northern island, isolated in a severe land and not exploited by that time.

When they just arrived their new destination, the mother of the young lad got ill because of the tiredness of the hard trip, the sudden change of weather and environment. With no medication nor doctors near by, the mother fell in a hard fix situation then young Tokujiro tried to relive her ache, rubbing, hitting, massaging or pressuring the shore zones. In his fight against his mother's pain, supposed to be multirheumatism, Tokujiro realized that the best thing to do to relieve the pain was pressuring with fingers certain zones of contracted muscle.

Encouraged because of a light improvement of his mother, and thrust for his affection, Tokujiro tried to get better his method "to put the hand"(te-ate in Japanese) little by little in a pragmatic way adapting the quality of pressure depending on contracted muscle state and inflammation until his mother was totally sane.

After he accomplished different massage credentials, he drew up a few essays always based in those experiences which marked his professional life. In a few years, after investigations and vicissitudes, he created a new therapy called "shiatsu" (pressure with fingers) which was recognized by Health Office of Japan.

In 1926, Tokujiro founded a clinic specifically of shiatsu in the city of Muroran in Hokkaido, he published in 1934 "Shiatsu Therapy and its Physiology", in 1940 founded Japan Shiatsu Collegec

After what it has been exposed, we could say shiatsu has been established in Japan in a short period of time, until now that it can be taught in a specific college licensed by Health Office.
